born WORTHY. did not begin in a boardroom. It began with a simple act of affirmation for girls in Trenton, New Jersey.
At the time, the founder, Ayana Abdul-Raheem, was serving with the Trenton Police Department and working closely with girls under a project out of the juvenile unit. Around that same period, she was seriously injured in a car accident while on duty. Not long after, the program supporting the girls she had been working with was suddenly canceled, leaving them without guidance, structure, or continued support.
Ayana did not want to watch them fall through the cracks.
Wanting to do something that would affirm the girls and allow them to see themselves differently, she organized a photo shoot for them out of her own pocket. The goal was simple: to show the girls that they were not statistics or problems to be managed, but young women with beauty, strength, and power.
For the photo shoot, she created a simple t-shirt.
After the shoot, something unexpected happened.
People began noticing the shirts and started asking if they could buy them. At the same time, the reality of the girls’ situation remained that their program had been canceled and they no longer had the support system that had once been in place.
So a decision was made. If people wanted the shirts, the shirts could become the solution.
The shirts began to sell, and the proceeds were used to continue mentoring the girls and provide simple wellness essentials they needed in their everyday lives. What began as one act of affirmation quickly turned into something more.
born WORTHY. emerged as both a brand and a declaration: you do not become worthy, you are born worthy.
Today, every piece of apparel continues to carry that same purpose forward. Sales help fuel the born WORTHY. Project, a wellness-based self-worth initiative rooted in radical self-care. The project supports young people in learning how to protect their well-being, strengthen how they see themselves, and advocate for their own lives.
What began with a group of girls in Trenton, NJ continues to grow. When young people understand their worth, they begin to see and care for themselves differently. And here at born WORTHY., we have been highly valued since day one.
